TIFF - Filmmaker Lab

TIFF Filmmaker Lab is a talent development programme that takes place during the Toronto International Film Festival in September. Each year, 20 Canadian and international directors receive an exceptional professional development experience, and an introduction to the global community of filmmaking.

Grierson DocLab
UK-based people aged 18-25 have until 5pm on Friday, 24 February 2023 to apply for this prestigious training programme. Grierson DocLab, with support from The Rank Foundation, aims to help people without connections to the factual TV and documentary industry take their first steps into securing the work experience and networks to succeed in the sector..

Pillars Fellowship
The Pillars Artist Fellowship—created by Pillars in partnership with Riz Ahmed and Left Handed Films—champions and mentors Muslim directors and writers whose presence behind the screen will be game-changing for the film and television industries. In addition to an unrestricted award of $25,000, each fellow will receive mentorship from industry experts on how to navigate the business of Hollywood

Producers on the move
Each year, 20 promising, up-and-coming producers from throughout Europe are selected. The initiative is aimed at connecting young, enterprising European producers with potential co-production partners, strengthening their industry networks and, at the same time, providing a solid and visible platform for this next generation of European filmmakers.

Cinefondation
The La Cinef school film selection, the Caméra d’or Prize for best first feature film, the Short Film Competition: each year, the Festival scours the international film production for the talents of tomorrow. A tailor-made training workshop focusing on the role of the creative producer, providing tools and know-how to approach the international market.

Focal
FOCAL organises further training and practice-based courses for film and audiovisual professionals in Switzerland and Europe. The seminars, workshops and discussion panels provide participants with the necessary knowledge and know-how, offer them a space for practising new working methods and promote exchange and networking among professionals.

There are many good films, but only few of them become excellent and memorable. What makes the difference? Since 2010, dok.incubator, an international documentary rough-cut workshop helps filmmakers turn good films into exceptional ones.

Writers Lab
During the intensives, mentors and writers engage in a rigorous process of script development through one-on-one meetings, panel discussions, peer workshops, and mock writers rooms. Alumna then focus on the industry for up to 6 months to boIster market potential. Interactions are designed to prompt creative exploration; to cultivate first-rate cinematic stories; and to ready the projects for market.

Biennale College Cinema
Biennale College Cinema is the higher education workshop of La Biennale di Venezia, created for emerging filmmakers to develop and produce microbudget feature-length films that will be presented at the Venice International Film Festival. Overall, since 2012, the workshop has awarded the Biennale grants to produce 34 feature-length films (costing no more than 200 thousand euro each.

OKRE Development Fund
OKRE's venture arm, providing financial support to early-stage imaginative and collaborative entertainment projects. OKRE funded projects currently in development include dramas, comedies and games.

Cinema De Demain
Writers Residence
12 foreign directors are welcomed at the Paris writing residence to work on their 1st or 2nd feature film.
Over the four and a half months of their stay at the Residence, every filmmaker is accompanied in the development of his or her script, and advised in the transition to production. The programme also includes a series of collective forums with industry professionals.

Producers on the move
We run two flagship programmes – TalentLab XR and B3 Origin. We also develop, co-create and support projects with other artists and organizations from exhibitions, short films, digital and multi-platform storytelling art projects, to live art projects and more.

Rotterdam Lab
Rotterdam Lab is a training workshop for producers at the start of their career, with the aim of offering emerging international professionals the means to build and develop their network. Providing confidence and skills to navigate the world of international film financing, sales and distribution, Rotterdam Lab annually hosts more than 70 producers from across the world during the IFFR Pro Days.

Next Step
Next Step is a week-long workshop held in France in December. During the workshop, the filmmakers have the opportunity to discuss their projects with international experts and tutors so that they may be advised on their scripts, to understand the reality of the industry and define the right development strategy.

New Cinema Days: Open Call
The Lab will be a catalyst for new digital cultures and technologies for innovative, live, virtual and immersive cinema production. Jed Mecurio Mentoring
Jed Mercurio is launching a new mentorship programme for budding writers in the UK. He hopes it will give more opportunities to those who live outside of London and are from low-income backgrounds or are underrepresented in the UK’s TV industry.

The (Egg)celerator Lab is focused on identifying and supporting nonfiction directors working on their first or second feature-length documentary. This program brings together ten projects, with a special focus on stories by self-identifying women and gender nonconforming directors.

Cinemart
CineMart is IFFR Pro's co-production market, where a carefully curated lineup of projects in development are presented to international industry representatives. Bold independent feature film projects are launched onto the market, along with select immersive media (XR) projects. Together they receive vital mentorship and networking opportunities

Red Sea Festival Labs
The Red-sea Labs announced today the selection of 12 projects, from new and exciting voices from Saudi Arabia and the wider Arab and African region, which have been selected for the Red Sea Lodge, a development program in collaboration with the TorinoFilmLab and sponsored by Film AlUla. The Lodge is an intensive ten-month mentorship program, aimed at the next generation of emerging filmmakers to help turn their project ideas into a reality.

First Cut Lab is a comprehensive training & consultancy programme supporting audiovisual professionals in Europe and worldwide, and their feature films at the editing stage. Created in 2015, First Cut Lab is run by Tatino Films – a company that also initiated the Full Circle Lab and the Pop Up Film Residency.

International Documentary Forum Film Festival
Within IDFA's Filmmaker Support department, IDFAcademy organizes year-round training programs for emerging filmmakers with the aim of stimulating new talent and high-level documentary production. IDFA Project Space and IDFAcademy during IDFA are geared towards international participants, while the IDFA Project Space NL is open to Dutch-speaking participants.

Founded in 1999, EURODOC is an international, selective, in-depth, and intensive training program in creative documentary development and production, boasting a 23-year-long history and community.
